The problem is when you convert 4 – 9/2 to √(4 – 9/2)². You actually change it from negative value to positive value.

Explanation:

We should not get confused of these 2 things

x² = ...  

and  

√(x)² = ...

When we use x², the value of x could be either positive or negative, but when we use √(x)² the value of x would be always positive. This is the basic principal in math.

So now we check that

4 – 9/2 = -0,5 (it is negative)

And

5 – 9/2 = 0,5 (it is positive)

So at the beginning we actually have the negative form of 0,5. Then, we square it so that at the end we  find the square root is the positive form of 0,5.  

If we could pick the negative form of 5 – 9/2 (it means 9/2 – 5 which equals to -0,5), then we would have consistent calculation.

2 + 2 = -(5 – 9/2) + 9/2

2 + 2 = 9/2 - 5 + 9/2

2 + 2 = 9 - 5

2 + 2 = 4

But we can’t use 9/2 – 5 as the square  root of √(5 – 9/2)² since it will break the basic math principle. So here we get a conclusion that we should not change a number (x) into square root form (√(x)²) since it would change it from negative form to positive form.
